Second-hand sax checklist – Things to look out for

Great questions to ask when you’re buying a second-hand saxophone. There are plenty of great bargains to be had on the second-hand market but you can also buy a sax that needs a lot of work to bring it up to a good playing standard.

Asking these 10 questions helps you make a great decision based on the answers that your seller gives. If you buy a sax that costs £200 but needs a full overhaul, that could cost you £500 or more and you’ll be left with a sax that isn’t worth what you have spent on it. Even after the overhaul it might only be worth £200 to £300 depending on the make and model.

10 great questions to ask when buying a second-hand saxophone:

1. How long have you had the instrument?

2. Why are you selling it?

3. Have you owned it from new?

4. Where has it been stored?

5. When was it last checked and adjusted/serviced?

6. Has it been repaired, if so what are those details?

7. Does have the original case and mouthpiece or any other mouthpieces with it, or any books, a stand or other accessories?

8. Is there any wiggle room on the price?

9. Can I come and see it and play test it?

10. Are you ok with providing a receipt?
