Stan Getz style minor scale lick (tenor & alto)

How to improvise with a Stan Getz style minor scale lick for alto and tenor sax.

Practising the same lick in all 12 keys is something that great sax players do. That way, when they are in a musical situation, like following a chord chart, they have something under their fingers, ready to deliver.

In this video, we take a very cool lick that is similar to the kind of thing Stan Getz might play.

First, we ensure that we understand the structure of the lick. Then, we play it over a chord progression straight, develop it a little, and mix it in with some other phrases. I show you the notes for everything I’m doing.

Next, we take the lick around the cycle of fourths together. I play it and then leave a space for you to play it, showing you the notes for both alto and tenor sax in the captions at the bottom of the screen.
