One scale, endless solo ideas: The available pool of notes
What if scales weren’t just ladders with a fixed beginning and end?
In this lesson, I’ll show you how to shift your mindset and start thinking of scales as an AVAILABLE POOL OF NOTES that you can draw from freely while you improvise.
This simple change in perspective makes your scales feel more musical, more connected, and far easier to navigate during a real solo.
Instead of seeing separate shapes that you have to climb up and down, you’ll learn how to build one cohesive musical picture in your mind.
We’ll start with the notes of C Major. Rather than treating the seven modes (Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, etc.) as isolated scales, we’ll treat them as one pool of seven notes.
The notes stay the same—all that changes is the "home note," or the musical center.
In this video, we explore:
- Why the "ladder" mindset can restrict your playing
- How to visualise C Major as one connected pool of notes
- How the seven modes emerge from that same pool
- How to select notes from the pool to create Pentatonic and Blues scales
- How changing a single pitch can unlock entirely new musical colors (like Harmonic Minor or Altered sounds)
- Practical ways to connect these ideas so you can move between sounds without feeling like you’re "jumping" between scales
Stop memorising isolated shapes and start playing more fluidly today!
