Sax beginner to wedding performer in two years

From beginner to wedding performer: Jonathan Currington’s saxophone journey

In 2019, a gentleman named Jonathan Currington approached me with a wonderfully ambitious goal: he wanted to learn the saxophone from scratch so he could play Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” at his daughter's wedding in 2022. Jonathan had never played a musical instrument before, let alone a saxophone, and I’ll admit I initially thought it might be a bit of a tall order given the stress of a wedding day.

However, Jonathan was absolutely determined. I told him that he would need to practice every single day and also gain some real gigging experience—busking and playing at smaller events—so he wouldn’t be too nervous when the big day came. Jonathan took on every challenge with incredible dedication. He worked tirelessly, practicing daily and gaining confidence through smaller performances.

In the end, his performance at his daughter's wedding was a complete surprise and a huge success. It was a truly inspiring story of what determination and hard work can achieve. If you're interested, do check out the interview I recorded with Jonathan, which includes a clip of that special moment. It’s a wonderful reminder of how amazing people can be when they set their minds to something.
